Using a Drill Press for the 1st Time

Using a drill press can be a daunting task for a first-time user, which is why I’ve decided to go through some of the steps that are required when installing and employing such a machine. It’s important to note that a drilling machine, regardless of the type you may have in your workshop, is one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment out there, so you need to pay extreme attention when operating it. The first safety tip that I recommend is to avoid using your hands while the machine is in use, so be sure to avoid performing any adjustments by hand. For enough protection, it might be a good idea to use a holding device so that your hand is can’t become damaged in the process. Both eye and hand protection are required to make sure that the entire operation is safe and efficient as this way, you’ll be able to maneuver the workpieces in a correct manner.

Typically, there are two types of drilling machines ( more details on each type)  you may choose from when starting to prospect the market. Some are hand-feed, and others are power-feed. The first are light-duty and are somewhat more widespread and more affordable when compared to their power-feed counterparts. By contrast, the latter are heavy-duty and significantly larger than the other types, but the main advantage of choosing such a machine is that it is capable of feeding the tool into the work automatically. As such, they’re considerably safer to use, have more force, and can drill through many more kinds of materials.

The first thing you need to do, right after getting the unit delivered, is to read the instructions offered by the manufacturing brand. Many people overlook the manual but the fact of the matter is that it is oftentimes the most comprehensive and concise resource to use when you have little to no knowledge or experience. The instructions can tell you exactly how you can set up the unit so that it doesn’t affect your work in a negative fashion.

After you’ve made sure that your drill press is installed properly, what you need to do is set the speed. Most of the models out there come with adjustable speed settings, allowing you to select the right one for the kind of material you may using at a certain point. Faster speeds are utilized for wood whereas slower ones are required for metal. Proceed by removing the chuck and fitting the bit. Always begin by drilling a small hole in a piece that you can do without. Continue by setting the right table height and gauging the depth. A crucial thing to keep in mind is to secure the workpiece so that it doesn’t go running around when you’re trying to do your drilling. On the one hand, you have to do this because it can be harmful to you and other people around the drill press. On the other hand, you should do this so that your drills are precise.

Drilling is easy as long as you’ve installed the unit properly. As a preventive measure, it is recommended that you make use of some cutting oil so that you don’t burn out the bit.
